Datacentre IPs can show you a different auction than a real visitor sees. What geographic precision, clean IPs and sticky sessions are actually for.

Ad verification is one of the few proxy use cases where the requirement is precise and the wrong setup produces confidently wrong data. Here is what actually matters.

The problem

Your campaign is running in twelve countries. From your office, everything looks correct โ€” but your office sees a version of the internet shaped by your location, your history, and the fact that ad platforms recognise the advertiser.

You need to see what an ordinary visitor in Chicago sees. Then Berlin. Then Tokyo.

That is the whole job, and it is harder than it sounds.

Why residential, not datacentre

Ad platforms and fraud-detection systems treat datacentre traffic differently. Some suppress ads entirely for known datacentre ranges, on the reasonable assumption that servers do not buy shoes.

So a datacentre proxy does not just risk being blocked โ€” it risks showing you a different, quieter version of the auction than a real visitor sees. You get data, it looks plausible, and it is wrong.

Residential IPs are genuine consumer connections. The ad you see is the ad a person there would see.

What you actually need

Geographic precision. Country is rarely enough. Ad buying is often set at state, metro or city level, so verification has to match. If your campaign targets Chicago specifically, a proxy in Illinois may not reproduce it.

A clean IP. An address with abuse history may be shown a degraded experience โ€” or excluded from the auction entirely. Check fraud scores before trusting the data.

Session control. Some checks need several page loads as the same visitor: does the retargeting fire, does frequency capping work. Sticky sessions hold one exit IP for a set period so the sequence is coherent.

Enough volume. Verifying a large campaign means many checks across many locations. Per-gigabyte billing suits this, since each check is a small amount of data.

Common mistakes

Checking from one IP per country. One address in Germany tells you what one German visitor saw. Ad delivery varies by user, region and time โ€” sample several.

Ignoring the fraud score. An IP flagged as suspicious may be served a different experience. Your verification then measures what abusive traffic sees, not what customers see.

Rotating mid-check. If a check needs three page views as one visitor, a rotating IP breaks it and gives a false negative on retargeting.

Assuming a block means fraud. Sometimes it means your proxy is flagged, not that the publisher is doing anything wrong. Confirm from a second clean IP before escalating.

A practical setup

  • Residential proxies with city-level targeting for the locations you buy in

  • A rotating pool for single-page spot checks at volume
  • Spot-check the IPs' reputation periodically, since it changes
